President Trump has once again criticized Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, calling him a ’major loser’ and reiterating his desire for lower interest rates. Trump is the only sitting president in modern history to publicly threaten to fire the Fed chair. Global leaders, however, have emphasized the importance of central bank independence. Both Joe Biden and Barack Obama expressed disheartenment with slow progress on inflation but respected the Fed’s autonomy.
